Updated description of Depth to Hardpan (soils) from
Hardpan at shallow depth influences not only the effective rootzone of plants, but also impact on engineering uses of land. Hardpan is defined as material which is too hard to dig with hand tools. Hardpan is cemented or indurated material, in or below the soil, developed as part of soil forming processes. Hardpans are generally (relatively) young materials. Assessments are based on an interpretation of Soil Landscape Map Units which account for variable conditions found within each map unit. This dataset was developed by the State Land and Soil Mapping Program and resides within the State Land and Soil Information Framework.

Hardpan is material that is too hard to dig with hand tools, that has formed in-situ within or below a soil.
